The lower reaches of the Shannon Estuary which flows and blends into the Shannon River creates the most fantastic and interesting waterway in Ireland. The Estuary extend from Limerick City in the upper reaches out to the mouth of the Shannon to a line between Loop Head to the North side and Kerry Head to the South, measuring about 15 kilometres. From the entrance which laps the Atlantic Ocean to the inner sheltered water at Limerick City is close to 100 kilometres following the deep water buoyed channel.
Ecologically the Shannon Estuary has a unique value with a large group of Bottle Nosed Dolphins. Seals, migrating birds and wild fowl are more than abundant and can be viewed from both land and sea when seasonal weather permits.
From our base in Kilrush Marina an hour’s drive will take you to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. On the south side of the river is the start of the Ring of Kerry.

The Fleet
Velella
Velella is a Beneteau Oceanis Clipper 411. She was launched in France in the year 2000 and from there went to the Mediterranean where she cruised extensively for 5 years and then returned to Ireland in 2005. She was then purchased by her current owners and has cruised and raced in the Shannon Estuary and the South West Coast of Ireland. In the summer of 2005 she sailed round Ireland stopping off at Islands and Ports on her way. She has proved a most seaworthy boat in fine and foul weather. Velella has without question lived up to her reputation as one of Beneteau’s most excellent yachts.
Velella is a 6 berth, 3 cabin layout with 2 heads. Length overall is 12.71m. Waterline 11m. Abeam 3.95m and draught 1.70m. Main engine is a 50h.p. Volvo Penta. Electric bow thruster. Sails – a furling genoa, a main sail fully battened with lazy jack system.
Trident
New to our small fleet is ‘Trident’ a Sun Odyssey 37, which combines beauty and performance. The boat has a new smooth roof design and new deck layout. On the performance side, the keel/ballast ratio improves sailing stability and the generous sail area keeps the boat moving well under all conditions.
You will find the best of everything you need on this boat, including a bathing deck and swim ladder, which adds enormously to the safety of this beautiful boat.
This two cabin version is centered around a salon/L-shaped galley with a traditional navigation table to port. Located aft is a very large and well ventilated wash room with a marine head and shower. The two cabins are roomy with comfortable berths, lots of floor space, good storage lockers and opening hull ports for good ventilation.
You will find ‘Trident’ is an exceptional sailing experience designed for your safety and exceptional comfort.
Background
Shannon Estuary Yacht Charter is managed by Richard Glynn, who has a
lifetime association with the Shannon Estuary. He comes from a family who
have played a major role on the Shannon River, dating as far back as the
Shannon Steamship Company (circa 1850-1950) and then in more recent times,
his father Charlie D. Glynn, was the driving force behind the Shannon Ferry,
which commenced service in the Summer of 1969, linking Kerry and Clare.
Richard is presently employed by Shannon Foynes Port Company, who are
involved with the safe navigation of all Commercial Shipping on the river.
From a very young age Richard has sailed extensively on the Shannon, west and
south coasts of Ireland. In 1995, Richard was part of a crew who delivered a 43ft.
Beneteau Oceanis from Kinsale to the Canary Islands, stopping off at Maderia
on the way.
In 2005, He sailed round Ireland in ‘Velella’ an Oceanis 411, taking in islands on
the north west coast and ports and marinas on the east and south coast.
With Richards vast sailing experience and knowledge of the Shannon estuary, he
would be delighted to share his experience of the Shannon river and Atlantic
ocean with you, to help develop an individual sail plan for your charter. Sailing
in the Shannon can be a challenging and exhilarating experience. It also offers
safe, sheltered waters with stiff sea breezes and very little or no sea swell which
makes it a most comfortable and enjoyable sailing experience.
Please call Richard on 086 1203144/Fiona on 086-2136304 or e mail for further
information on your chartered holiday in the Shannon Estuary.
